2- HALAKHOT ON CHAMETZ – PREPARATION FOR PASSOVER

1st HALAKHO

 SEARCH FOR CHAMETZ (BEDIKAT CHAMETZ)

It is customary that on the night of Kal Chamira (the search for chametz)—which this year will be Tuesday night, March 31—ten small pieces of bread, wrapped in paper, are placed and scattered throughout different rooms of the house.

During Bedikat Chametz, the search is conducted by candlelight, carefully checking the places where chametz might be hidden. The pieces found are kept to be burned the following morning.

 After searching for and burning the chametz, the annulment of the chametz (Bitul Chametz) must be performed.

⚠️ Important:

The annulment must be done verbally, declaring that any chametz remaining in your possession is considered dust of the earth.

It is also very important to go to the rabbi of your community to sell the chametz.

If a person keeps chametz in their possession during Passover without selling it, even if they don't eat it, taste it, or even look at it, that chametz remains forbidden after Passover, and no benefit can be derived from it.

 2nd Halakha

GIFT OF CHAMETZ DURING PASSOVER

If a goi (gentile) brings a Jew a kosher cake that is chametz as a gift on the last day of Passover, before the holiday ends:

It is forbidden to accept it.

Why?

Because upon acceptance, it becomes the property of the Jew, and during Passover, it is forbidden to possess chametz.

⚠️ Remember:

As long as the Passover holiday has not completely ended, the prohibition against possessing any type of chametz remains in effect.

Our sages teach that chametz symbolizes pride and arrogance, which inflate a person's heart.

By removing chametz from our homes, we also remember to purify our hearts and approach God with humility.
